I just go to places like Best Buy, WalMart or K-Mart to get my prepaid phones and top-up cards. They usually have great deals with cheaper plans than the Verizon or Sprint stores offer.

My current favorite is NET10 which offers 300 minutes and two months service free with every phone. After that their call rates are a low 10c per minute, even long distance, with ZERO daily use charges! No roaming fees either. Best deal IMHO.

I am saving a fortune going prepaid with Net10. All calls cost 10c per minute and texts 5c per text for local, national and roaming! I got a lovely Samsung T401G phone with a slide out qwerty keyboard for $79.99 as I'm a heavy texter and I LOVE it!!
